Becks Fish & Chips, Carbis Bay

Becks is a Fish and Chip restaurant and take away located in the heart of Carbis Bay near St Ives.

Owned and run by the Stone family for over 25 years, Becks is well loved by locals and visitors alike – on a Saturday in peak season, the restaurant will serve 300 covers and another 500 in the take away!

In 2013, Becks carried out a full refit of their premises and TEE Ltd managed a complete rewiring of literally everything electrical within the building – from the kitchen to all the lighting in every room.

TEE assisted owner Richard Stone in selecting the best lighting solution, to greatly improve energy efficiency as well as the ambience in the restaurant.  Richard explains:

“There is LED lighting throughout, and low energy fittings.  We chose LED as it compliments the look of food compared to traditional fluorescent lighting.

“In our rest rooms, the lights come on automatically, controlled by PIR system which detects a slight heat change as someone walks into the room.  It uses only 50 Watts to cover the whole area.

“In our restaurant itself, which is big enough to sit 120 people, we’re only using 200 Watts to cover the whole area.  The cost of running this is 80% less than the conventional lighting we had before.”

Richard used an interior shop fitter to design the refurbishment and TEE worked off their lighting plans, adapting things accordingly:

“Obviously everything was designed and drawn out, but things don’t always go to plan.  There were extras we needed, but there was never any hassle; TEE worked around the changes with no problems and got the job done on time.

“Their part of the project was actually held up, but when it was time to do the electrical work, they had the manpower to helicopter in plenty of men, to get the job finished within the original time schedule.”

“They also managed to save me £1,800 as we found we had to move the main fuse board and only had a short time to do it.  Instead of me having to pay to have the main Western Power cable into the premises, TEE’s electrician managed to find a workaround solution.”

Next, Richard is planning for TEE Ltd to install Solar PV onto their roof, to cut energy costs even more.

“TEE are our preferred electrical supplier; they are always very professional and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.”
